Is the TJ voltage regulator in the alternator? I believe the XJ's are regulated by the ECU, I would imagine the TJ may be the same.

Really? The regulator is usually a pretty good sized thing. I'd be surprised if it was inside the ECU, if for no other reason the heat. I'd like to know for sure though.

A little while after buying my XJ, it would die after it got hot. I would let it cool, start it and drive for a mile or so and it would get hot and die. Eventually I popped the hood and there was this thing bolted to the passenger fender that was God awful hot. Once home I was able to open it up and research and it was an external voltage regulator and had gone bad. I search and could not find that the XJ had one. My father who has been a Jeep parts salesman for 10yrs or more couldn't find that it had one. After reading on some forums I read that it was controlled by the ECU so I connected the wires that once ran to the voltage regulator to the battery and all was find and has been for 3 or 4 yrs now. Now why a PO put an external voltage regulator on it I don't know....

Yeah I noticed them. I can't say that I have seem them put there before. I have seen people put them under the headlights where the turn signals were on the prior CJ/YJ models. I am not a big fan of round headlights and square turns signals though. I have also seen people put CJ turn signals in the grille and I liked the looks of that.
Don't take it the wrong way though. I believe in to each their own and am not bashing your rig, it looks really clean.
