Default Xj vs wj vs fj80 vs 4runner. What to buy next?

So I have an 8 month old and my 24 year old honda civic hatchback isn't the ideal family vehicle. My 03 rubicon is better suited to the trails, so I'm looking for a good daily driver under $10k. I was leaning toward a 97-01 xj, but I am open to wj as well. My wife says that both are ugly and I need to buy a land cruiser or 4runner. I live in AZ so A/C is a considration. I drive about 35 miles round trip every weekday. What's my best bet and why?

I would reconsider this marriage, Toyota!? My wife and I own an 04 wj which was the last year. The ride and handling are really nice, maybe not quite as nice as an ifs 4runner but would be an easy sell to the wife. They have every option you could want and a v8 is an option. Ours has been trouble free for 150k. We opted for a special edition model, it had the limited's body colored cladding but not any of the dual climate or extras we didn't care for. I also liked the fact it still had the solid axles and the 4.0. That was important me since we have two zjs in the family, one with 279k and another with 226k and still running strong. I like modern ride and connivance's but with the old school drivetrain, to me best of both worlds. Xj is very nice but I don't think the everyday aspect is quite as good. Ride, room and amenities are definitely better in the wj. My 2cents, but really love ours.

Tell us how it turns out!

I have been doing more research, and it looks like the WJ might make the most sense for what I will be using it for. I think you get more for your money vs. a Toyota too. Should I be looking for a 4.0L?

the 4.7 v8 makes good power and moves the wj along pretty well, but I don't think the longevity is there. The 4.0 may be antiquated in some sense but will last 250k pretty easily. You wont win many drag races but it does move out fine. My wifes averages about 16mpg and on trips we have had 20-21. Some really good deals can be found on them.

Thank you... No Thank you...Thank You....No Thank you...

rindergdill.. you have split personalities? Perhaps one of them could create their own log in?

Regardless... they are both welcome here.

Not sure what the going rate for a FJ80 or what year 4 runner you could get for $10K. I like the looks of the 4 runner but am not familiar with their reliability.

$10K could purchase and repair/modify an XJ quite nicely...

So it looks like I've narrowed it down to an 03-04 wj. One of the main reasons is that they have the LATCH system which makes installing car seats a quick and easy affair. The grand cherokee seems to be more plentiful and cheaper than the xj where I live. I'm not planning on many modifications considering I already have two other modified jeeps...but we all know how that goes!

Perhaps then you would be interested in our sister site... www.xjtalk.com (there is a Grand Cherokee section). Also Cody from TrailChasers.net does a Grand Cherokee segment (Grand Adventure) on the Jeep Talk show (www.JeepTalkShow.com) that may be of interest, though it won't help the "not going to modify it" part any...

famous last words! Now that I have a grandson the anchor points are extremely handy and would not have thought about it before. I like the xj a lot as well but the car seat in the rear of my buddies was a bit of a pain for him. Second hand knowledge though, but the wj has been great to us for getting the kid out of his seat.

In my 2 door XJ it was a pain to get the kids in the back seat and get them buckled, especially a infant. Have a 4 door now (still have the 2 door) and it is much easier compared to the 2 door, but the infant is 4.5yrs now too so that makes a difference but I imagine it wouldn't be too bad. Im sure the larger door opening of the Grand is nice though.
